Setting Up Shop: A Guide To Business Startup
Written by Shawna Rupper
When starting a new business there are many things that you need to have firmly in place before you begin in order to ensure your success. Many businesses fail within their first two years of operation, and the majority of those fail due to lack of proper preparation and planning. With careful business plans and budgets in place you greatly increase your chances of starting a very successful new business.

Budget

The first and most important part of starting a new business is the creation of a very detailed budget. You need to consider all of your startup costs as well as your operational costs during your first few months of operations. All business go through a ramp up period of at least a couple of months before they are researching the kinds of sales that they want to achieve, and it is important to budget enough money to sustain your business during that establishing period.

Marketing Plan

The second plan that you need to have firmly in place is the marketing plan. You need to decide what the best ways and arenas to advertise and get the word out about your business are. You also need to consider other very important marketing concepts such as branding. Effectively branding your company with things like logos and slogans is a great way to ensure that you can create a growing awareness and recognition of your company. The most successful marketing campaigns throughout history have been those that are very good at branding their products and their company.

Delivery

You also need to decide how you are going to get your goods or services to your customers. These days, there are two main options for doing that. You can either have an actual store or office that you can use to meet your customers face to face, or you can have a website that enables your customers to procure your services over the internet. Many people find it most profitable to do both. But, both have their own concerns before you begin business.

Location

If you need a store or office, you need to scout an appropriate location. You need to find a place that is within your budget while accessible and visible to the demographic you are targeting. You also need to include many extra costs in your budget such as rent, decorating, and equipment if applicable. When creating an online storefront, you need to consult web designers and programmers to ensure that you have the best possible website for promoting your business. The internet is flooded with junk websites, and to get noticed and be effective you have to have a great website, as well as an effective web marketing team to drive traffic consistently to that website.

Success vs Failure

These might sound like a lot of things to think about, and the list could go on even longer. However, with careful planning, budgeting, and preparation, you are greatly increasing the chances that your new business will be one of the ones that becomes a success story, rather than another statistic of failure.
