Small and medium sized business owners know that you need to use the Internet to market your company, your services, and your product in the new global economy. A business owner should think of their website as an e-business solution and an asset, not an expense to the company.

New Approach

Business owners need to develop a new way of thinking when it comes to the companies’ website and how it fits into the corporate marketing mix. They have to be proactive instead of reactive in attracting business to the company. No longer can a company build a website and have a philosophy of “if we build it, they will come.” The next logical question is “How do we make our site an asset and work for us from a marketing standpoint?”

SEM and SEO

The way to make your website work for your company from a marketing standpoint is to implement the variety of Search Engine Marketing (SEM) techniques that are available. There is Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which is considered organic search marketing, and is a technique and process in which, over time, your site appears on the first page on major search engines when a keyword related to your company or product is searched for. As stated, this technique usually takes time and includes adding new landing pages and freshness of content to your site. By doing this, the major search engines (i.e. e.g. Google, MSN, Yahoo) will raise your search ranking over time and consider your site an important resource in your particular industry. This is where effective use of relevant keywords and concise, crisp SEO writing is important.
