What about a franchise?
If you’re an entrepreneur at heart and enjoy running your own business, but do not feel comfortable with the high-risk associated with starting a business from scratch, franchising might be for you. This article overviews the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a franchisee.

Advantages of Purchasing a Franchise

Franchising gives you proven design features and business plans that would not be in place if you started your own business from scratch. Essentially, the trial and error period is over. The company is most likely already well known, possibly nation-wide, which means that a general customer base has already been established.

Additionally, if you decide to go with a franchise, you have access to training and resources that you would not otherwise have. Furthermore, franchising attracts people because it is an area that allows small business owners to compete with large chains. For instance, if an individual has always desired to run a certain type of business, opening a franchise would give them that opportunity with significantly less risk. Moreover, if you owned your own business and were looking for expertise, you would have to buy that advice from a professional. With a franchise, you can call the franchisor and ask for that advice.

Disadvantages of Purchasing a Franchise

Despite all of the advantages, opening a franchise is not completely free of risk. It is recommended that, if you are considering purchasing a franchise, you consult with an attorney early in the process. As a franchisee, one has very specific legal rights and an attorney can ensure these are being respected. Furthermore, it is important to ask to see background information and financial information for the franchise you are considering purchasing. If the franchise is not doing well, and happens to go out of business, you will also be out of business.

The amount of control you have over your own location varies from franchise to franchise, but regardless you will not have as much say in matters as you would if you started a business from scratch or chose not to open a franchise. If you do not think that you will be happy without having a significant amount of say in the operations, menu, and management, you might want to reconsider the possibility of becoming a franchisee.

Something else to consider is whether or not franchisors will view you as capable of running their franchise. Franchisors are looking for individuals that have the financial capability to cover all the costs as opposed to just barely being able to cover the costs to open the door. In general, franchisors feel as though individuals that are outgoing and motivated are most likely to succeed.

Overall, there is a franchise area for most everyone who feels that franchising is right for him or her. Before purchasing a franchise, you must evaluate personal interests, the amount of time you have to spend, your financial status, the desired location, and the specifics regarding the franchise you are interested in. It is important to choose a franchise that you can afford, but it is even more important to choose one in an area that you are interested. If you decide to move forward, make certain to consult with an attorney.
